Description
Photograph of a view through the Arch of the Memorial Church at Stanford University following the 1906 earthquake, 1906. The dirt road in the foreground at center leads to the stone porch which is now covered with stone debris. The Arch above at center still stands, but the top and upper right corner has crumbled. The walls of the arcades that extend from either side of the Arch are greatly damaged and the roofs have caved in. The buildings on either side, as well as the statue beyond the Arch, appear to be intact. A wall stands behind the statue with the steeple of the Memorial Church behind it. The top half of the steeple has been reduced to just one section of the thin frame.
Photoprint reads: "Stanford University's famed Memorial Church shows the stub of its steeple through arch. Both the arch and church were heavily damaged by the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. Stanford campus is 35 miles south of San Francisco and three miles off San Andreas Fault".
