Description
Title supplied by cataloger.; Photograph was edited for publication purposes.
In 1937 seventy-five set decorators broke away from the IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Moving Picture Machine Operators of the United States and Canada) to form their own association, the Society of Motion Picture Interior Decorators (SMPID) and negotated an independent contract with the producers. In 1943 they would affiliate with the CSU Local 1421.
Photograph caption dated May 1, 1937 reads "Photo shows a group of film crafts pickets at one of the Hollywood studios today as 3000 painters, decorators, scenic artists and makeup workers went on strike. Work in the studios was going as usual today, as pickets made no effort to halt workers reporting for duty. Stars and extra girls alike walked through the picket lines. Some cooks and culinary workers in studio cafes left work in sympathy." The men are in small groups, standing around. Cars are parked at the curb. Power and telephone lines can be seen and trees and buildings are in the distance.
