Description
Thomas Frederick (Fred) Bagshaw was born in 1899 in Cardiff, Wales and came to Mill Valley as a small boy with his parents. Fred's uncle, Frederick W. Bagshaw, had come to Mill Valley a few years earlier and sent for his brother to join him in the building business. In his oral history, Fred recounts his early days in Mill Valley, including the role of baseball games, his experience with the 1929 fire, and his attempt to enlist during World War I. After owning his own firm as a general importer in San Francisco, Fred began a longtime public career as Mill Valley Planning Commissioner and City Councilman, Director of the Golden Gate Bridge District, Assistant Director of the California Department of Public Works, and member of the Marin Board of Supervisors. He recalls his involvement in several epic political battles, including the effort by the Army to build a munitions loading center in Marin near the end of World War II, and the municipal bus vs. private bus controversy. Fred married Allena Huntoon in 1934 and together they had one daughter, Barbara.
