Photographic portrait of James Wilson Marshall, 1872. Marshall can be seen seated at center facing to the right. He is holding a hat at right and is resting on a cane at left. He is wearing a dark suit with a dark tie and a white shirt. His dark hair is combed back on his head. The chair on which he is sitting is resting on a patterned quilt on the ground. On January 24, 1848, Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill, Coloma village in El Dorado County, California.
