Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Soberanes Rancho buildings, site of the first college in California, ca.1880. A post-and-rail fence runs along the left side of the image, enclosing a small collection of pigs and chickens. A little farther back, a tree on the opposite side of the fence has begun to stress the fence, and its foliage partially obscures one of the two-story houses pictured in the photo. The house stands with its narrow side to the viewer, its lower window visible from beneath the tree. Farther back and to the right, a similarly designed building stands perpendicular to it, displaying five small windows on the second story, and three on the lower story. Interspersed with the windows on the lower story, a door and a larger window are positioned. The earth in the foreground appears dusty and fallow.
Picture file card reads "College started by Father Patrick Short of the Picpus fathers in 1831 and was called 'the seminario de San Jose'. Photo was presented to A.D. Spearman by Mr. Nate a Soberanes, descendant of Hartnell who married into the Soberanes family. Photo of 1880 by J.T. Pollock, 64 South River Street, San Jose". An earlier version of the record reads "'First College in California. On Rancho Alisal near San Jose.' The date 1834 is listed. U.C. Berkeley??".
