Thought for the day by Charles Handy on balancing individuality with respect for the rules and norms of society. Handy begins the thought discussing how viewing an opera made him consider the price of individuality vs. conformity and acceptance. He proceeds to talk about how he grew up during a time in which young people were expected to behave the way their elders did, as opposed to how his children have been raised. Handy then argues that too much individuality in society can be detrimental to the whole, and states that it is only when one's individual contribution is recognized that one can safely be more unique and independent-minded.
