Photograph caption dated June 17, 1944 reads, "Big-mouthed film comedian Joe E. Brown today was presented the Eisenhower medal for having been named "1944 father to all men overseas." The presentation was made by Fletcher Bowron, mayor of Los Angeles, with the approval of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. "Joe has traveled over 100,000 miles visiting every battlefront in the world," Bowron said, "He has entertained 2,000,000 men - more than any other performer." Because "Sunday is Father's Day, the award is most timely," Bowron concluded. Brown, who lost a son in this war, will take part in launching the fifth war loan drive next week in Sacramento."
