Description
Postcard published by Edward H. Mitchell, San Francisco, Cal.
The beautiful city of Monterey is located on Monterey Bay along the Pacific coast in central California. It was established in 1770 by Father Junipero Serra and Gaspar de Portola, and served as the capital of Alta California from 1777 to 1849 under Spain and later Mexico; California statehood began in 1849. Once famous for the abundant fishery in Monterey Bay, that changed in the 1950s when local fishery businesses collapsed due to over-fishing. Some notable residents have included: (painters) Arthur Frank Mathews, Xavier Martinez, Rowena Meeks Abdy, Percy Gray; and (authors) John Steinbeck, Robert A. Heinlein, Henry Miller, and Robert Louis Stevenson, among others. As of 2005, the city population was 30,641.
Color postcard of majestic cypress trees located at 17 Mile Drive, which is a scenic road that runs along the Pacific coastline in Monterey. Description on the front, upper portion of the postcard reads: "Ostrich Tree, 17 Mile Drive, Monterey County, California".
