Description
"Masons at Work near Quarry". External view with men working in a long, sheltered hut, carrying out masonry work. The mission trained carpenters and masons, at a quarry that was nearby. Industrial schools were an important aspect of the work by the missions in Africa. The training of apprentices and raising of educational standards was considered important in establishing the foundations for commerce and trade. Boys were often taught skills such as carpentry as the training enabled them to build better homes for themselves and others and provide them with a trade. By these means, they would be expected to become relatively prosperous and would keep them at the mission for longer periods of time. It was hoped that this would mean that these young men would become well-instructed Christians.
