Description
This photograph inside the Palace Saloon, which was located at Cahill Street and The Alameda, features a rare interior view. According to the notes on the back of the photograph, the bartender is Frank Welch. The patrons at the bar from right to left are: Otto Eventrout, a teamster for Old Joe's Beer; Otto's helper; Carl Fisher, a sign painter; and P. G. Bailey, a bicycler. Notice the carpet layer is still working on the floor on the left side of the photograph. According to San Jose historian, Leonard McKay, the second story of the saloon was a brothel. The building has since been moved to Morse Street. Notes on reverse of mount: "Palace Saloon, Nov. 10, 1902" "Frank Welch, booze clerk, Otto Eventrout, Old Joe's Beer, - - -- -- -- -- -- , Otto's helper, Carl Fisher, Sign painter, P. G. Bailey, Bicycler'" "Ëd Bertelsman photo fron Gertrude Waterman, 7/16/1975" "Caille Upright Slot Machine" "1904 San Jose Directory: "Palace Hotel, J. Woods, Prop. The Alameda corner Narrow Gauge RR (Cahill)"
