Description
Glass plate negative of the South Pacific Coast Railroad depot at New Almaden, with a steam engine and passenger car on the tracks next to the station house. A group of six men stand along the edge of the back of the station platform, three men stand near the passenger car on the ground and platform, and a woman stands at the back door of the passenger car while another woman looks out of the back window of the car. A small hand-pumped railcar is on the tracks next to the train. The narrow gauge South Pacific Coast Railroad was built between Alameda and Santa Cruz as a competitor to the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1886, the SPC constructed a branch line from Campbell to New Almaden to capture the mining market. Southern Pacific Railroad responded in-kind by building a seperate railroad line to New Almaden. As a result, New Almaden had two railroad depot serving two different railroads. This situation was short period as the SPC was leased to the larger Southern Pacific in 1887 resulting in the closure of the pictured depot and station activity moved to the standard gauge depot. Ironically, mining activity in the area was already in decline. Nonetheless, the two lines to New Almaden survived intact until the 1930's when the former SPC route was abondoned to provide the right-of-way for Camden Avenue. Camden is a abreviation of the two endpoints Cambell and New Almaden.
