Three-quarters length portrait. 2012-1304. Removed from the Lillie Hitchcock Coit Collection, April 19, 1930. James (Jem) Mace was born in England in 1831. Known as "The Gypsy", made his debut in 1857. Toured the United States from 1869 to 1876, relocating to Australia in 1876. Was also a skillful violinist, worked in and briefly owned circus. Died in England in 1910.
