Description
Photograph of a young Walapai Indian mother (squaw) with child on her lap, Hackbury, Arizona, ca.1900. She sits on a stool or chair (not visible) on two Indian blankets -- one with a cross pattern, the other with a diamond and stripe pattern -- in front of two additional blankets hung on a wooden wall -- both striped. A baby, strapped to a papoose board with a basket at top to shade the baby's head, lays on her lap. Her right hand lays on the baby's torso, her left hand helps prop the head end of the board. She is wearing a striped button-up blouse under a patterned shawl or blanket around her shoulders, and a long patterned dress. Her dark hair has cropped bangs, otherwise hangs to her shoulders and is parted in the middle.
