“Some of the trained teachers attending the course, Aug. 1949.” Group portrait of female teachers representing some of the eighty to ninety teachers employed in Chogoria’s out-schools. This image was taken during a refresher course for teaching staff in August 1949 at Chogoria. Changes, at this time, to the educational system by the Kenyan authorities would introduce standardisation and increased access to schools. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1947-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established near Mt Kenya, in 1922, and run by Dr Irvine.
