Althea Warren, San Diego Public Library's first professionally trained librarian, reorganized and modernized the library, initiated Saturday morning story hours for children, combined the Men's and Women's Reading Rooms into one Periodical Room, established branch libraries and led fund raising efforts to enlarge the crowded main library. Under her tenure the San Diego Public Library earned the 1921 American Library Association distinction of having the largest circulation in the United States for cities of comparable size.
