View of the stone chapel at Switzer's Camp, located in the Angeles National Forest. The camp, originally built in 1884 by Perry Switzer, was the first tourist destination the area. For several years, the camp barely held on, but in 1911 J.R. Phillips acquired the failing business and made it more successful than ever. The great flood of March 1938 washed away the one mile road that lead to the camp from Angeles Crest Highway, but for years the it struggled on into the 1950s under the name Switzer-Land. This stone chapel was the last structure standing until it was evenutally demolished by the U.S. Forest Service. What little is left of the camp is identified on USFS maps as Commodore Switzer Trail Camp. Photo dated: March 24, 1929.
