Description
"The famous Santa Anita ranch of E.J. Baldwin adjoins Monrovia on the west. Hotel Oakwood is at Arcadia, at which place the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railways intersect. It is a popular winter resort, and is under the same management as the Tallac House at Lake Tahoe, and its season begins about the first of October, at the close of the Tallac. It is built of brick, with wide verandas, and is complete in all its appointments. It is the center of interest on the "Lucky" Baldwin ranch. M. Lawrence is the able and obliging manager. Daily during the season coaching parties drive from Pasadena and Los Angeles to the Oakwood for lunch, after which a visit is usually made to the race track, where the famous blooded horses are daily in training. The ranch contains 56,000 acres." Monrovia Messenger Souvenir Edition 1897
