Photographic portrait of a soldier in a trench during World War I, ca.1916. The man can be seen at left and is looking towards the viewer. He is wearing a dark trench coat and holding a metal helmet in his hand at right. A large haversack is slung over his shoulder. Thin tree branches hold up the wall of the trench in the background. Bushes are visible along the top of the trench.
