Tinted lantern slide of Marco Polo Bridge in Beijing, showing a golden statue of a bull in the foreground. The bridge was built in 1192, but was reconstructed in the 17th century, bridging the Yongding river. Also called the Lugou Bridge, it received its nickname following praise in the annals of explorer Marco Polo, who visited the Yuan Dynasty court in the 13th century. In more modern times, the bridge was famed as the area from which Japanese soldiers launched the attack that forced China into declaring war against Japan in 1937. The slide was developed by the Photo Department, Tientsin Hui Wen Academy, Tientsin, China. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914.
