"Hospital patients and visitors, Mwenzo." Group portrait of four individuals sitting on the verandah of a brick building. ❧ Mwenzo is situated half way between Lake Nyasa and Lake Tanganyika in the Namwanga Country and just four miles from the Lake Company’s Fife station. Founded in 1894 by Alexander Dewar (d.1943), in reaction to the expansion of the catholic missions in the north, it was situated close to the border of German East Africa and was over run during the First World War. It was run, much of the time, by Yohane Afwenge Banda, a Tonga evangelist and Dr James Alexander Chisholm (1872-1936) who ran the mission and hospital from 1900-1936, he was also appointed J.P. of Rhodesia and translated the New Testament into Chinanwonga. The Chisholm Memorial Hospital in Mwenzo was named after him.
