Description
Side view of the First Samadhi Buddha -- a seated Buddha in crystalline limestone; the hollowed out eyes would have been inset with crystal and gems. The head is covered with snail-shell curls and appears to have and a centrally located protuberance known as the uşnīşha. The statue is now covered by a stone pavilion and surrounded by a short wall -- a variant of the Sanchi-type "Buddhist-Railing." Situated to the east of Abhayagiri stupa. Height: 5 feet 9 inches. Earlier there would have been four statues at this location, which is between the Abhayagiri stupa and twin ponds.
