Photograph was edited for publication purposes and has a vertical crease on the left side of the photo. The tar pits are adjacent to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. The museum was dedicated in 1965. The George C. Page Museum of La Brea discoveries was built in 1975. Photograph caption dated January 2, 1964 reads "Statues of prehistoric beasts graze on banks of pool in Hancock Park." The article partially reads "The Rancho La Brea Tar Pits, located in the middle of the fashionable Miracle Mile, has yielded approximately 500,000 fossiles (sic) and bones."
