Description
Photograph of a lithograph from Benjamin Nayer's diary depicting the exterior of the Plaza Church in Los Angeles, 1860. The church is a large, white, rectangular adobe building with its façade and main entrance at right. There is a large arched doorway set into the façade, and above this is a tower topped by a cross. Another arched doorway is at left, opening out onto a fenced-in cemetery. There is a large hill in the background, devoid of plant life. Additional information: This adobe church collapsed due to the lack of maintenance and was completely rebuilt in 1861 on orders of Thaddeus Amat, the first bishop of Los Angeles. The hill in the background is Fort Moore Hill most of which was removed in 1949 for construction of the Hollywood Freeway (U.S. Route 101).
