Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
The Macy Street Underpass began construction in 1931 by the City of Los Angeles and headed by architect Merrill Butler. The structure is a closed-spandrel reinforced concrete elliptical arch with earth fill. During his career at the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering that spanned four decades, Merrill Butler (1891-1963) supervised the construction of over 200 bridges, fifteen of which have been determined eligible for National Register of Historic Places.
Detailed view of part of the Macy Street Underpass that shows one of the cement columns with exposed rebar. Dirt mounds and mud can be seen on either side. The Macy Street Underpass is located at E. Cesar Chavez Avenue and N. Vignes Street. See images 000323655 through 00032367; 00107305 through 00107311, and 00107324 through 00107328 for additional photos in this series. Photograph circa 1937.
