Description
street scene with people in front of stores. Oliver Chilled Plows on display. Begun in 1853, the Oliver Chilled Plow Works was based in South Bend, Indiana. The company had patented an annealing process, called chill hardening, which provided an extremely hard and durable exterior surface. The opening of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 enabled eastern manufacturers , like Oliver Chilled Plow, to open storefront businesses in San Jose.
