In June 1983, a young Contra soldier rests on one knee as he observes the countryside at El Porvenir Farm, located two kilometers from the Honduras-Nicaragua border. He is holding his FN FAL assault rifle over his right leg. In the background stand the mountains of the Nicaraguan countryside. He is a member of the Nicaraguan Democratic Force (FDN in Spanish), whose members are known informally as "Contras."
