Three auxiliary boats are visible attached to the ship's rail and, to the right, the flag of the United States can be seen at the end of the boat. People can be seen above and below deck. Water covers the foreground and surrounds the ship. A dock area and houses can be seen in the far background. Photoprint reads: "The Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co., Ltd.'s S.S. 'Mauna Kea'. Type of the fleet of vessels which keep the several Islands of the group in close touch with each other."
