In the 1960s, Burbank hosted a number of civil defense drills in which hundreds of workers from dozens of city and county organizations dealt with simulated emergencies brought on by a hypothetical major earthquake. The people "injured" in the exercise were brought to Bellarmine-Jefferson high school which served as a practice field hospital. In this photo, dated 1964, nurses and doctors prepare a room for incoming victims. Notes on the back of the photo (though likely not contemporary to the photo) indicate that the drill imagined a nuclear disaster, though Los Angeles Times articles indicate an earthquake was the focus of the exercise. From notes on photo: “Nuclear Disaster Exercise” and “1964.”
