In 1955, actress Jane Russell founded the World Adoption International Fund, sometimes locally referred to as the Women's Adoption International Fund. WAIF was a volunteer organization designed to help facilitate overseas adoptions by American couples. Russell adopted three children with husband Bob Waterfield and her career was nearly ended because of one of the adoptions. Photograph caption dated May 31, 1960 reads "Jeweled crown, symbol of royalty represented by three princesses who will be honored June 4 at annual WAIF ball, is viewed by committee chairmen, from left, Mmes. Patricia Lloyd, Jack Neuman, Richard Jones and Robert Wyckoff."
