Mary E. Hollister, born in Ohio in 1848, was a wealthy heiress from a prominent ranch family. She married General Phineas Banning in 1870 - two years after Banning's first wife, Rebecca died after giving birth to their eighth child. Mary and Phineas would eventually have three children of their own, three girls: Mary H. Banning (1871), Lucy L. Banning (1873), and Ellen M. Banning (1874). Mrs. Banning passed away in Los Angeles, though the date is unknown.
