Workers install sound barriers during construction of the Orange Line, at Topham Street. This 14-mile-long Busway will be used solely by a fleet of clean-burning buses; the Orange Line buses, known as Metro Liners. Thirteen of the miles are constructed along the former Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way. Its route parallels the 101 Freeway, directly linking North Hollywood with the Warner Center, but promises to significantly reduce commuting time. MTA identifies all of its Metro Rail lines by assigning each line a different color. The Orange Line was formerly named San Fernando Metro Rapidway, but the MTA Board of Directors approved the new name on January 22, 2004, and it refers to the many citrus trees that once blanketed the San Fernando Valley.
