- Description
- Photograph of a drawing by R. W. Porter depicting an interior view of Mount Palomar Observatory and a cross-sectional view of the 200-inch telescope, with parts labelled, 1938. The telescope is illustrated cut away along a vertical plane through the polar axis. At the bottom of the picture, the ground floor of the observatory is visible. In the center of the image, the 200-inch telescope is seen pointed upright, supported by a slanted tubular base. To the left of center, a phantom drawing shows how the observer gets on and off the prime focus tube atop the telescope. Surrounding the telescope is the cross-sectional view of the dome and its shutter openings.
Photoprint reads: "The 200-inch telescope. This drawing, by Russel W. Porter, associate in optics and instrument design, California Institute of Technology, shows the 200-inch telescope, cutaway along a vertical plane through the polar axis. The tube weighs about 140 tons, the entire instrument 500 tons, and the rotating dome, 1000 tons. The telescope, to be located atop Palomar Mountain in Southern California, will be completed early in 1947. Area of sky to be photographed will be quite small, say a patch having a dimension from 1/5 to 1/3 that of the full moon. Considered as a camera, the telescope will have a "speed" of F/3.3".
