Description
The Gothic-style Folsom State Prison is shown from the northeast, circa 1900. As early as 1878, it was the state’s intent to make Folsom a branch prison of San Quentin. It received its first 44 inmates from San Quentin in July 1880. The first was a native of Canton, China: Chong Hin. To the far right of the photograph is the prison’s original administrative building, while the long structure behind it is Folsom’s original cellblock, also known as Building Number Five. China Hill – with a guard tower atop it – sits to the left of the photograph. Beyond the administration building is the far bank of the American River.
