Description
Southside Park's lake is pictured here in the late 1920s. While clearly beautiful, the mission of Southside Park's developers was to create a sanctuary for children, where play and recreation would be given the strongest attention. Even as early as 1910, saloons were forbidden from setting up operations alongside the park. With that said, tens to hundreds of children's events came to occupy the park???s rich history. In August 1914, over 300 children participated in an ""angling"" day. The limit per child was set at ten for the lake's stock of black bass, split tails, carp and white fish. By the Holiday Season of 1912, an ambitious playground was donated and constructed by Weinstock, Lubin and Company. During the Easter weekend of 1931, the park was overrun by 6,000 children looking for 10,000 eggs. The event was sponsored by the Sacramento Bee and the Sacramento Municipal Recreation Department.
