Description
"The Palace of the Winds (Hawa Mahal) from the Manak Chauk. The hill behind (2 miles distant) fortified [?] buildings 500ft above the city. 1925 ft above sea level." External view of the Palace at Jaipur as seen from Ruby Square. The Palace was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. Constructed from red and pink sandstone, it was designed to represent the headgear of Krishna. The name “Palace of the Winds” possibly refers to the many windows, which allow breezes to cool the palace. ❧ United Free Church of Scotland photographs from the Rajputana mission.
