Houses in foreground, waterfront buildings (including lumber dealer) in background; river with sailing ships, dredge, ferry. "Taken Jan 23rd '09, Sherman Island flooded. Highest tide ever known" -- handwritten on verso.
In January 1909, levee on broke, flooding the island.
