Description
Looking south from Merchant Street, this 1963 photograph shows Arden's women's clothing store at 700 K Street, the Flagstone Hotel at 1111 Seventh Street, and the Milner Hotel at 1121 Seventh Street. Arden's underwent sizable rennovations in 1942 and 1950 that brought expansion to its K Street foorprint by way of multiple levels and a doubled frontage to 300 feet. To the far left of the frame is a portion of the city's old Post Office and Federal Building at 701 K Street. Opening in 1894, the venerable structure was closed as a Post Office in 1933, continuing as a Federal Building until its razing in 1969. Under construction in the background is one of State Office Buildings 8 and 9, both completed by the end of the 1960s.
