Like ghostly gravestones, chimneys stand on November 24, 1938, marking the charred ruins of cottage beach homes that lined the Pacific shore north of Santa Monica before the great brush fire that swept out of Topanga Canyon. Hundreds of homes were destroyed and thousands of acres of valuable watershed were burned by the fire, which still rages.
