Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Description
Jeanette Young was a Chinese American elementary school teacher born and raised in Los Angeles. Jeanette’s parents, Young Suey and Mansie owned and operated the Young Produce Company on San Pedro St. and were active members of the Chinese Congregational Church in Los Angeles. The couple met through the Congregational Mission School and married around 1911. Jeanette had four older brothers and the family resided on Irolo St. between the Koreatown and Pico Union sections of Los Angeles. Young Suey and Mansie spoke different dialects of Chinese so the family communicated in English. Mansie volunteered within the local Chinese community and helped with civic duties such as voter registration. Young Suey was born circa 1884 and arrived in San Francisco in 1908. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1909 and attended business college before starting a career in wholesale produce.
