Description
“Liaoyang Lady Missionaries, 1910.” The Women’s Foreign Mission had a strong presence in Manchuria and the majority of girl’s schools and women’s hospitals were run by female missionaries, many were qualified teachers or doctors. Liaoyang sits on the Tai-tzu River in fertile plains south west of Moukden [Shenyang]. The United Presbyterian Church established an outpost there when Old Wang, the indigenous evangelist, was sent there in 1882. Rev. James A Whylie (1863-1894) was based in Liaoyang from 1888-1894. In 1892 Dr Westwater opened a large hospital and his wife started a small women’s hospital and a training home for Bible women. The first female doctors arrived in Manchuria in 1896.
