Presidential Candidate Ángel Aníbal Guevara's speaks in front of a crowd of Mayan women, men and children at a campaign rally during election week. He is standing in front of a microphone with his left hand in the air. Many in the crowd are wearing colorful traditional Mayan clothing. Behind Guevara there are four campaign flyers with a portrait of him wearing a military uniform. There is also a large poster that reads, "Vote like this." On March 8, 1982 Guevara won the presidential election although electoral fraud was claimed by other parties. A military coup prevented Guevara from assuming power and installed a three-man junta headed by General Efraín Ríos Montt.
