Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
La Quinta is a resort city located in the Coachella Valley, first established in the early 18th century by Spanish conquistadores. Agriculture developed in present-day La Quinta in the late 19th century and early 20th century by pre-modern and modern irrigation techniques; in 1927 Walter Morgan established the now-famous La Quinta Resort, as a secluded hideway for Hollywood celebrities and socialites; State Route 111 was constructed and paved in the 1930s; and in the 1950s and 1960s, further expansion of Washington Street connected La Quinta with US Highways 60 and 99. La Quinta, nicknamed "The Gem of the Desert", was incorporated as a city in Riverside County in 1982. Growth rose dramatically by the mid-1990s, and as of the 2000 census, the city's population was listed at 23,694.
Birdseye view of a section in La Quinta, located in the Coachella Valley; view is looking slightly south. Fritz Burns Park, located on Avenida Bermudas (running vertically) and 52nd Avenue (running horizontally), sits prominently in the middle with sparsely scattered dwellings all around. Even though several palms and other lush trees are sprinkled throughout, the area still appears to be extremely arid. Photographed for Ralph Brown on June 16, 1956.
