Engraved on a stone slab in medieval Sinhala is a very long document pertaining to the Code of Discipline for monks and novice formulated by the great Mahathera Kashyapa at the invitation of King Parākramabāhu the Great. It is located outside the cave with the seated Buddha. This "document" was the result of the king's desire to bring about harmony among the three main nikayas (sects or monastic divisions) and unify them under a single nikaya.
