“Mr Carr’s memorial in centre of compound Chogoria.” Exterior view of a large brick structure with a bench, occupied by a man reading, a clock , and a plaque, written in Kikuyu, reading, ‘This memorial has been built to the glory of God, and in memory of Ernest Carr, who greatly loved the African people and founded this Mission. He fulfilled the command ‘Whatsoever, thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might.’’ ❧ The youngest son of the owner of Carr’s biscuits, Ernest Carr (1868-1939) was the father of Margaret Joyce Irvine, and had moved to Nairobi in 1920, after selling his jam factory. He financed the Chogoria mission through the early years, covering building costs and staff wages. ❧ The image is from the first twenty years of the Chogoria mission in Kenya, which was run by the Rev. Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974), from the collection entitled ‘Chogoria, glimpses into the past’.
