Lydia Knapp Horton, wife of prominent San Diego businessman Alonzo Horton, initiated the fund raising and led the campaign for a library building for San Diego. She began correspondence with Andrew Carnegie in 1897 and by July of 1899 had persuaded Carnegie to pledge $50,000 towards the construction of a library, an amount he later increased to $60,000. Lydia was also a founding member and first president of the San Diego Wednesday Club, a cultural and literary club for women. Title supplied by cataloger
