Description
Jimi Castillo, along with his cousin-in-law Lupe Lopez, are descendants of Gabrielino Indians, the Native American tribe of the Whittier area. In 1990, they attempted to halt construction on a site in Whittier they believed was a Gabrielino burial ground. This was based on information found in the ethnography "Chinigchinich". It was ultimately declared the site was not a burial ground, and construction continued. This is now the shopping center at Whittier Blvd and Hadley. See LA Times article "Mall Site an Old Burial Ground, Indians Claim" Sept 9, 1990.
