Photograph was edited for publication purposes Minnie Barton was the second female parole officer in the Los Angeles Police Department. In July, 1918 she established a halfway home to help troubled women get back on their feet. The first home was in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles, then one in Boyle Heights and a still larger one in Sunland, at 10131 Johanna Avenue. She also founded the Big Sister League, now called the Children's Institute, Inc. and the Bide-A-Wee home for unmarried pregnant women. Barton died in 1946. Photograph caption dated May 16, 1955 reads "Twin sisters Lillian and Norma Bellows, left, celebrate 64th birthday at Minnie Barton Home, where they have lived for 33 of the 35-year-old home's existence. With them are, from left, James William Barton, son of founder; his wife, and Rev. John Erickson."
