Description
The Sacred Tooth Relic is encased in seven golden caskets. The golden casket of the Sacred Tooth Relic is in the shape of a stupa. A replica placed on the back of a specially trained elephant is used in the annual procession in Kandy of caparisoned elephants, dancers and musicians, among others, during the festivities in July/August to honor the Sacred Tooth Relic, which does not leave the premises of the Temple. The main pageant, the Kandy Perahära, lasts eleven days through the streets of the city but is joined by others, which are much longer in duration, originating at four Hindu temples in the city.
