Note the attempt to obliterate the Los Angeles Times ad on the side of the Hellman Building, which was occupied by The Herald at the time this photograph was taken. By 1957, the Hellman was owned by the Los Angeles Times, who demolished it in March 1959. In the 1980s, this corner held the Times Mirror garage. Isaias W. Hellman founded the Hellman Building; architects were Morgan & Walls. This event marked the laying of cornerstone for the Chamber of Commerce building. A large group of men dressed in uniform stand amid an enormous crowd, just outside the Hellman Building, located on the northeast corner at Broadway and 2nd Streets.
