Photograph of a panoramic view of Fourth Street looking west from Main Street -- site of the Van Nuys Hotel -- Los Angeles, ca.1887. Tall thickly foliated trees dominate the foreground. Mostly small commercial buildings line Fourth Street at left. The Street goes up a steep hill in the distance at the top of which several large Victorian houses are situated. Other larger commercial buildings and scattered dwellings are at center and right including a church. A few horse-drawn vehicles and pedestrians are on Fourth Street. Legible signs include: "Shaving 10¢", "Market", "Niles Pease furniture & carpets", "Salisbury Block", "J.W. Davis Drug Store", "205, C.E. Donahue, fancy groceries", "Walton & Wachtel", ..."eachy Harness Emporium"....
